2010 International Convention QUILT Drawing

By Judy Runion, Lincoln Chapter Quilters

The quilt drawing which we all look forward to each year at the Annual AHSGR Convention will be the Center Diamond pattern. Entirely constructed by the Lincoln Chapter Quilters, the ladies donate their time to the society sewing the quilts in the Boardroom at the society museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, every Monday.

This quilt is a modified Amish quilt pattern–a simple geometric design. It speaks of strength and simplicity. The colors are strong and the quilting is full, balancing the starkness of the design. These intense colors and simplicity of its pieced design create a strong, unusual statement. Feathered wreath motifs characterize the Center Diamond. The back of the quilt is a whole cloth making it equally attractive on either side. This quilt measures 96 inches by 96 inches. Three hundred, eighty-seven sewing hours went into the making of the quilt by the Lincoln Chapter Quilters.

An Amish quilt is fascinating because in this modern, fast-moving, technological age, one often grasps for links with the past to find stability: Faith—Family—Tradition. Quilts stand for symbols of the past, speaking of long family evenings, gatherings of church ladies, and handcrafted works of love.

TOURS

Note: The tours are all at their own pace and participants can walk as much or as little as they want.  Buses will always drop off and pick up at the same location.  Please mark the appropriate box on your registration form.

Tour # 1 – Tuesday, August 3, 8: 00 AM to 4:00 PM - Homestead National Monument of America & Museum, Lunch, and Bedient Pipe Organ Manufacturing Company.

Homestead National Monument & Museum is one of the first documented homesteads in the nation. The Heritage Center will be the first stop with exhibits and a bookstore. Other activities include the Palmer-Epard Cabin built in 1867; the furnishings depict life in the 1880s. The one-room Freeman school is restored to its 1890s appearance; it was the oldest in operation in Nebraska and closed in 1967. The Education Center is an outlet for lifetime learning opportunities, with farm implements used by pioneers, and three miles of trails going through the restored tallgrass prairie; all wheelchairs accessible if you choose to participate on “foot.” The restoration of over 100 acres to tallgrass prairie began in 1939 along with recreating a dynamic ecosystem. www.nps.gov/home

Bedient Pipe Organ Manufacturing founded in 1969 by Gene Bedient welcomes tours. A white, castle-like building jutting up curiously from the rolling farmland upon closer inspection will reveal the 11,000 square foot shop designed specifically for the art of organ building. The small group of talented craftspeople creates about three instruments a year. The building is divided into three main areas: woodshop, pipe shop, and a 40 foot tall central assembly tower. Bedient has organs all over the US. Choose one of the 29 states on their website to see what organs are in your area. http://bedientorgan.com/facility.html

Tour # 2 – Wednesday, August 4, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PMSutton, Nebraska, Lunch, Emigrant House in Henderson, Nebraska Hosted by Jim Griess, Sutton native, the bus ride to Sutton & Henderson will include an illustrated historical presentation by Jim Griess. The first German Russian settlers to Nebraska came to Sutton in 1773 from Black Sea villages of Worms, Rohrbach, and Johannestal. Then GRs from Volga villages of Norka, Balzer, and Frank chose to settle in Sutton. It was the GRs arrival that turned the town into a prosperous shipping center for agricultural goods, building and farm supplies. The tour will include, in addition to the illustrated historical presentation, stops at the Mennonite heritage centre in Henderson, the Free Salem Evangelical German Reformed Church where services are still exclusively held in the German language, Emmanuel Reformed country cemetery where many GR founders of Sutton are buried. Then we will be served a German lunch at the Sutton American Legion. There will also be other stops at historical points of interest in Sutton. You can Google the towns of Sutton, and Henderson, Nebraska.
