This multi-volume historical gazetteer is dedicated to a phenomenon that no longer exists today but left deep and clearly recognizable traces in 19th- and 20th-century Russian history.

It concerns the approximately 300 settlements or colonies along the Volga River, founded mainly by German settlers, some as early as the 18th century. This lexicon offers concise, basic knowledge, enriched with numerous illustrations and
photographs on the history of former German colonies and, moreover, on the Germans who lived and worked in the major cities of the Volga region.
