Underwear Blanket: German-Russian Resourcefulness

In 1944, the Short Manufacturing Co. opened in the Haymarket District. This men’s underwear factory employed several German-Russians in Lincoln, NE.

Marie Rudolph Hegel and her niece Susan Rudolph Stoehr worked at this company in the late 40s and early 50s. Marie and Susan saved the fabric scraps from the underwear to make quilts. The company went out of business in the 1960s, and the building at 735 O St has been home to businesses such as a costume rental store and is now home to a cocktail bar called Kate Martin.
