Germans Repressed in Ukraine in the 1930s & 1940s

German Russians living in what is now Ukraine endured immense suffering under Soviet rule and World War II.

These Black Sea Germans faced Soviet persecution and deportation, before being caught in the Nazi occupation. These translated lists include the repressed German’s name, year and place of birth, occupation, and the sentence passed. The lists have been color-coded for clarity–red for executed and green for imprisoned. The predominance of red is a stark visual representation of the devastation brought by the Soviet and Nazi occupation.

Currently available are translated lists for the following regions: Charkiv, Cherkasy, Chernigov, Donetsk, Khmelnitsky, Lugansk, Poltava, Sumy, Vinnitsa, and Zhitomir. Additional regions will be added as the translations become available.
