“My name is Kim (Green) Finney, and I am a proud descendant of Volga Germans from Russia. Due to the fact that my ancestors settled, survived, and stayed in Kansas, I definitely came from “hardy” stock, as they say. Kansas has always been my home. I was born and raised in Wichita, graduated from universities in Topeka and Manhattan, taught school in Olathe, and now live in Ottawa, Ks.
“Dreams and Wishes” is an appropriate pattern name for the quilt that I made as a donation to the 2026 AHSGR Convention. The donation is dedicated to my maternal great grandparents, Friedrich and Maria Reinhardt Schwartzkopf who courageously migrated to America in 1875. Friedrich and Maria were from the village of Donhof, Saratov, Russia. They settled and homestead near Bison (Rush County) Kansas. In researching the family history, I have discovered that they were also sponsors to other family members who chose to emigrate and make better lives for themselves. Friedrich and Maria became parents to 14 children. All of their children were educated and became respected citizens in the Rush County, Kansas area. Our Germans from Russia ancestors were an inspiration for all of us that follow.”
