Convention Speaker William Ridinger: Across the Iron Curtain – One Family’s Odyssey

When the Red Army flooded across the Bug River in March of 1944, the villages of the Beresan region were in danger of being overrun. With only hours to spare, they loaded up their wagons and carts and set off on an odyssey that for many would last years, and would scatter them over three continents. Despite the distances and hardships throughout the Cold War years, families stayed in touch and would eventually become reunited.

William Ridinger Bill was born in Germany to a Bavarian mother and a Black Sea German father, who immigrated to America when he was six. After earning a degree in Civil Engineering, he spent much of his career overseas, including assignments in Russia and Kazakhstan, where he began to explore his German Russian roots. His book “”Orchards on the Steppes”” (available in the AHSGR bookstore) is based on his family history. Bill is also the Village Coordinator for Rohrbach.
