During the 1980s and 1990s the Berlin Wall came down and the USSR fell apart enabling many ethnic Germans living in Russia to finally return to Germany. These people returning are known as Aussiedlers (emigrants). AHSGR Board of Directors established the “Aussiedler Project” to conduct oral history interviews with the people now living in the Federal Republic of Germany for the purpose of learning more about the home villages, i.e., folklore, customs and life-styles, village maps, dialects, and family histories. This project also established a procedure to enable the Aussiedler to find their relatives who immigrated to North America and with whom they have lost contact. This project is advertised through the Landsmannschaft der Deutschen aus Russland. The result is many family reunifications and this collection of memory letters titled and indexed by village.
