This 400-plus-page collection of more than 100 letters and postcards written by Eugen Schmidt, his children and other relatives, offers a deeply personal, yet universal, glimpse into a very fraught time in Russian history, spanning about two decades, from the era of the last Tsar to Stalin’s reign of terror. The writers of these letters share not only the stark reality of their situations, but also their innermost thoughts, feelings and fears.
